SOSC and PPOL Prof. Stuart GIETEL-BASTEN’s comments on China’s record low birth rate last year, saying the statistics are in line with a general global downward trend as a result of the pandemic in 2020, but he expects the drop will ease off in coming years. He added that downward structural trend is likely to continue because the number of childbearing women is declining. Read more

Senior Advisor to the President and CIVL/PPOL Visiting Prof. Joseph LEE has been appointed as Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) with effect from January 2021.
Senior Advisor to the President and CIVL/PPOL Visiting Prof. Joseph LEE has been appointed as Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) as President with effect from January 2021. Prof. Lee will replace Professor Liu Liang in a position the also Faculty of Chinese Medicine Dean occupied since January 2013.

A new research project, "Accelerating the Development of a Global Innovation and Technology Hub in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area: The Roles of Public Research Universities in Hong Kong," has been funded by HKSAR Policy Innovation and Coordination Office Strategic Public Policy Research Funding Scheme (SPPR). Facing the unprecedented opportunities posed by the Greater Bay Area (GBA) Initiative, the project aims to provide a roadmap to guide efforts and strengthen the roles of public research universities in Hong Kong to accelerate the development of a global innovation and technology hub in the GBA. By taking a systematic and comparative approach, this project seeks to scrutinize global innovative universities as well as leading innovation and technology hubs, and identify global and regional good practices that are of relevance to Hong Kong. The investigators of the project are Professor Xun Wu (PI), Professor Anthony Cheung, Professor Joshua Ka Ho Mok, Professor Rui Yang, Professor Naubahar Sharif, Professor Masaru Yarime, Professor Edwin Lai, Professor Baojian Xie, and Dr Christopher Tremewan. The project is expected to begin from 1st April 2019 and last for 36 months. The amount of approved funding is HK$4,374,000.

A new research project, "Trans-regional Air Pollution Control in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area: The Interplay between Science and Policy," has been funded by HKSAR Policy Innovation and Coordination Office Public Policy Research Funding Scheme. This project aims to take a systematic approach to investigate the interplay between science and public policy on air pollution control in the Greater Bay Area. The first of its kind in Hong Kong and Greater China, the project seeks to improve the understanding on science-policy nexus by explaining how science can better help with informing decision-making in the region. The findings of the project will be of great relevance to policymakers in Hong Kong and China as well as offering insights to improve policy design. The investigators of the project are Professor Xun Wu (PI), Professor Alexis Lau, Professor Kira Matus, Professor Jerry Patchell, Professor Jimin Zhao, Professor Masaru Yarime. The project is expected to begin from March 1, 2019, and the amount of funding is HK$632,000.
