Governing Healthy Societies: Innovations and Policy Pathways for East Asia

HKUST Institute for Public Policy (IPP) is pleased to invite you to a half-day workshop titled “Governing Healthy Societies: Innovations and Policy Pathways for East Asia”, which will take place on March 17, 2026.

As East Asian societies navigate complex demographic shifts, technological advancements, and evolving healthcare demands, the need for innovative and cross-sectoral policy solutions has never been greater. This workshop aims to bring together leading academic and global health voices to explore the future of health governance in our region. We are honored to host a distinguished panel of speakers who are at the forefront of health policy and research:

• Dr Gina Samaan, Regional Emergency Director, WHO Health Emergencies Program; Director, Division of Health Security and Emergencies, World Health Organization

• Professor Minghui Ren, Director, Institute for Global Health, Peking University; Assistant Director General, World Health Organization (2016-2022)

• Professor Sophia S. C. Chan, Director, HKU Primary Health Care Academy; Secretary for Food and Health, Hong Kong SAR Government (2017-2022)

• Professor Hein Min Tun, Associate Director (Global Engagement), Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care, Chinese University of Hong Kong

• Professor Russell Gruen, Associate Provost (Health and Medical Sciences), HKUST

• Professor Vivian K.W. Lin, Chairperson, HKUST Committee on Global Health; Executive Associate Dean, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong (2019-2024)

In addition to these expert panels and discussions, a key highlight of the workshop will be the soft launch of a specialized Large Language Model (LLM) for health policy analysis that is developed by an interdisciplinary team led by Professor Jingwei Alex He (Division of Public Policy) and Professor Sirui Han (Division of Emerging Interdisciplinary Areas). This innovative tool represents a significant step forward in applying artificial intelligence to complex health policy challenges. We are excited to unveil its capabilities and explore its potential applications for research and practice.
