TRUMP: FIRST YEAR REFLECTIONS
DATE: 15 January 2018 (Monday)
TIME: 15:00 - 17:00
VENUE: 15/F, The Hong Kong Club Building, 3A Chater Road, Hong Kong
Abstract
The US presidency of Donald J. Trump has intensified political polarization and overheated rhetoric in the country to the point that there is little rational discussion or analysis of his leadership. Leaving aside partisan contention, this presentation will describe and analyze the domestic and foreign policy priorities and the first year record of the Trump presidency. It will reflect on how well President Trump's policies in the first year match his campaign promises and the aspirations of his supporters. As this analysis will naturally expose a large gap between promise and performance, it is essential to then explain what continues to drive support for the president among his core supporters, especially white evangelical conservatives and white working class citizens who were attracted to his populist economic message.
